The lines outside the redondel in Zapote yesterday began early. At 3pm the lines went around the block and then some, as people sat, stood, packed a lunch, played video games, blared music from their walkmans, all waiting for the 9pm headline show to see the meanest bull in the country, El Malacrianza.

At least 1.200 Nicaraguans have been rejected at the border or sent back by Costa Rican police officials when found to be in Costa Rican territory without proper documentation. One driver alone was surprised by authorities when he was found to be carrying 40 Nicaraguans illegally into the country.

With the ¢150.600 monthly* earned by a "Trabajador No Calificado" (unskilled worker) like a "camerera" (maid), Argery has to pay her rent ¢50.000 to house herself and her two children, spend ¢60.000 on food and ¢15.000 for utilities. With the remaining ¢25.000 Argery has left she has to pay her transportation to and from work daily, toothpaste and shampoo for herself and her children. Getting sick is a luxury.
