Laura Makes History, Becomes
Costa Rica's First Female President
Laura Chinchilla was on Sunday elected as
the first female president in Costa Rica's
history, winning the popular vote with a
46.8% support with 94.2% of the ballots
counted.

Laura Chinchilla has been converted in the
country's first female president, obtaining
almost 50% of the popular vote in Sunday's
presidential elections. But, who is she?
Solís and Guevara
Concede Defeat Early
With about 25% of the votes counted, Otton
Solis of the PAC and Otto Guevara of the ML,
the two main rivals of Laura Chinchilla,
conceded defeat in Sunday's presidential
election in Costa Rica.
Solís Almost Does It Again
Ottón Solís,
leader of the Partido Acción Cuidadana
(PAC), held third place in the polls
from the beginning of the 2010
presidential campaign, following almost
winning the presidency in 2006.
"El Menos Malo"
Couldn't Hide His Disappointment
Although Luis Fishman may have known from
the start of the campaign that his party was
a dead duck and his chances of being elected
president were slim to none, he did show his
disappointment last night at the failure of
the party to reach at least a 10% voter
approval and to elect more legislators.
Election Tidbits. Calderón Confident,
Pacheco Relieved
Former president Abel Pacheco, who
expressed concerned on the outcome of
yesterday's election results, said he
voted for the PASE party. Pacheco was
president from 2002 to 2006 for the PUSC
party. Voting at the Liceo de Pavas,
Pacheco said "this time I was not
involved in any political campaign and
for the first time I was without stress
or anxiety".

Inside Costa Rica readers had a chance
to vote all week for their choice of
candidate, giving Laura Chinchilla a 50%
support.
