This past week I have been
concentrating on the daily television news about the war
in Iraq. CNN and the local stations are my main
source of information, since Amnet is so kind not to have
ABC and then only sometimes CBS and NBC.
This led me to ponder and think about the last 40 or so
years of American history and came to the conclusion that
Gerald Ford was, perhaps, and only my opinion, a 'great'
American president.
I made that comment to some friends over the coffee and
they thought I had lost it completely. Not the first time
mind you.
So, before you think the same, consider my reasons:
Kennedy had the Bay of Pigs, the whole Fidel Castro and
the Russian thing going. The world came close to a WW3.
Then, Johnson took over and Vietman. Nixon inherited
Vietnam.
Carter had the Khomeni to deal with. Then Reagan, his Star
Wars, and a whole lot of other little conflicts
going on. Bush Sr., well he started with Saddam, but never
finished it. Maybe, he knew, that in the not so distant
future that one of his sons would be president and give
him the glory.
Clinton, when he wasn't drowning in Whitewater or 'not
having sex' with Monica, was busy in Bosnia and other
parts. And now Bush jr., taking over from where his father
left off.
Oh yeah, Gerald Ford.
Well, he DID nothing. No
wars. No conflicts. Didn't bomb anyone. No one threatened
to blow up America. Some will argue that he was never
voted into office, so he therefore had no real right to do
anything.
And based on that, Gerald
Ford could be said to have been a great president. The
only time in America's recent history when the world was
at peace with America and America at peace with the world.
This is only my opinion.
