Megasuper
Fined us$850K for Unfair
Advertising Practices in
Supermarket War
The Corporación de Supermercados
Unidos (CSU) has won the
supermarket battle agasint
Megasuper with a court decision
- the Juzgado de Mayor Cuantía -
in it's favour this week.
CSU, who operates the Hipermás
and Maxi Bodega stores in the
Central Valley, charged
Megasuper with misleading
advertising and unfari
competitive practices, when
according to CSY director,
Aquileo Sánchez, Megasuper
published advertising that
denigrated the images of it's
stores and confused the
customer, suffering damages as a
result.
The court ruled in favour of CSU
in it's decision of April 20.
Megasuper vice-president,
Kenneth Arrieta, defends the
advertising that it was based on
earlier advertising by CSU, it's
main competitor in the
supermarket wars.
The court ordered Megasuper to
pay CSU ¢400 million colones
(us$850.000) in damages and to
stop the unfair advertising
practice.
Megasuper filed it's appeal
shortly following the court
decision.
