French Naval Frigate to Dock in
Costa Rica

The French Naval Frigate FS
Prairial will be docking in the
Costa Rican port of Puntarenas
from May 9-13 as informed by the
Ministry of Security. This
morning Congress granted the
required permission for this
ship to enter national waters.
The visit will have the purpose
of allowing the ship to refuel,
obtain fresh provisions as well
as conduct social activities and
be opened to visitors.
With a displacement of 2950 tons
with full load, the FS Prairial
has 306 feet of length and 46
feet in width. It can reach a
speed of up to 20 knots and has
a range of 10000 nautical miles
at 15 knots.
Its crew is composed by 11
officers, 36 non-commissioned
officers and 42 sailors. It has
electronic navigation, radar and
warfare capabilities as well as
2 Exocet MM38 missiles, a 1 x
100 mm CADAM turret with Najir
fire control system and 2 x 20
mm F2’s. A Panther type
helicopter is also carried on
board.
Named after the 9th month of the
French republican calendar, the
FS Prairial is a light
monitoring frigate and is the
second ship of the Floreal
class.
