Colombian
security forces foil rebel plot
against President
The
Colombian security forces on
Thursday afternoon foiled an
apparent plot by the rebel
Revolutionary Armed Forces of
Colombia (FARC) to attack the
plane of President Alvaro Uribe
in the city of Neiva.
A communique from the
presidential office said while
conducting security checks in
the main streets and the airport
in Neiva, 240 kilometers south
of Bogota, prior to Uribe's
visit, the security forces found
several rockets inside a
residence building near the
Neiva airport and arrested five
FARC rebels.
The arrested rebels admitted
they had attempted to attack
Uribe with the rockets upon his
arrival at the airport.
President Uribe has insisted on
tough measures against
anti-government militants, and
has therefore become a target of
assassination for over 10 times.
Colombia has been ravaged by a
four-decade-long civil war, in
which government forces, leftist
guerrillas and far right
paramilitaries fight one
another.
The FARC is the main guerrilla
organization of Colombia with a
force of some 17,000 to 20,000
fighters.
