Cuba Maintains Relations with
more than 800 Foreign Cities
Cuba maintains extensive
friendly relations with more
than 800 cities of the world,
half of which is in brotherhood
with Cuban cities and the rest
is about to do so.
Julio Espinosa, general
coordinator of the National
Assembly of People´s Power
Foreign Relations Commission,
highlighted the solidarity and
cooperative links with foreign
cities, reported Cuban National
Information Agency (AIN).
He indicated that these links
are more numerous with Spain for
historic reasons, but added that
besides Mexico, Italy is also
outstanding for its strong
friendship.
The oldest sister-city
relationships began more than 10
years ago, with Mobile, Alabama,
US, and Lamentin, Martinique.
In the case of Mobile, the
blockade imposed by Washington
makes direct relationships with
city halls more difficult,
nevertheless very strong
solidarity movements still
manage to thrive, such as
Pastors for Peace.
There are now 20 sister-city
agreements with US cities and
another 30 are on the way, but
the process is being hindered by
hostile US government policy
forbidding US citizens from
travelling to Cuba.
