May 16 A Day of Protest For the High Cost of Gasoline
The protest planned by union leaders for May 16 will change it's tone. The original proposal called for a protest against the Tratado Libre de Comercio (TLC) - free trade agreement with the United States- however, organizers now say that the protest will be against the high cost of gasoline.

The Asociación Nacional de Empleados Públicos y Privados (ANEP) said yesterday that the objective of the protest is so that the government review the manner in which it handles the price of gasoline and to avoid a chain of price increases resulting from the high cost of the fuel.

In a press bulleting, ANEP, said that "key factor" in the protest is the gasoline issue, that is totally out of control and is abusing Costa Ricans.

On May 1st, ANEP and the other unions made their protest march, however it was not as successful as they had hoped. The march on that day was to let politicians know of their discontent with the TLC and the Riteve (the vehicle inspection) situation.

Vargas says that the TLC is still an objective of the protest, however, the high cost of gasoline is on everyone's mind at the present time, a situation that could see a spiral of increasing costs.

The protest will affect most of the public institutions as public employees will heed the call from their unions.
