Peruvian ex President Advises
Cool-head for Crisis with Chile
Peruvian ex President Alan
Garcia called to adopt wise
decisions in dealing with the
present crisis with Chile,
baring in mind Peruvian
emigration to the neighboring
country and the Chilean
investments here.
Bilateral relations have
progressively declined from last
March after an Ecuadorian ex
military revealed Chilean arms
sales to his country during the
1995 border confrontations with
Peru.
Garcia also termed such exports
as "huge and serious error"
while he praised the official
protest to the Chilean
government. However he called a
mistake having suspended the
meeting of ministers and
negotiations for a free trade
agreement with the neighbor.
This calls for an optimistic
look towards the future and wish
the Chilean government will ever
give due explanation. I am sure
that past this crisis it will do
so, added the ex president and
recalled that unlike 1995, ex
dictator Augusto Pinochet no
longer heads the Chilean Army.
