It Doesn't Pay to Bribe A
Transit Official; Woman Arrested
and Vehicle Seized!
Perhaps, in what could be a
first in the history of the
Policia de Transito, a woman was
detained yesterday for
attempting to bribe an Oficial
de Transito.
She is being charged with the
crime of "Penalidad del
Corruptor".
The story is that Transit Police
officials stopped a tanker truck
near La Uruca - west of San José
- because the the truck's
registration documents were not
in order.
The driver was notified by the
Transit officials that the truck
would be seized and that a
¢150.000 colones (us$320.) fine
would be imposed.
The driver called the owner of
the truck, who told the driver
to ask the officials how much
would cost to let it go?
The officials immediately called
their superior officer who
contacted the Sección
Especializada de Tránsito to
co-ordinate the detention of the
woman for attempting to bribe
their officials.
Reports say that the officials
made arrangements to meet the
woman near Plaza Víquez in San
José, where she was led to
believe that the officers were
going to take a ¢30.000 colones
(us$63.50) bribe.
However, she was detained by the
officials and brought to the
Fiscalía de Delitos Varios -
prosecutor's office - and
charged with corruption.
In addition, Transit Police
seized the truck.
