Thousands of Venezuelans
demonstrate to press for US
extradition of terrorist Posada
Thousands of Venezuelans marched
in Caracas on Saturday to press
for the US government's
extradition of Lius Posada
Carriles, a Venezuelan citizen
accused of terrorism by Cuba and
Venezuela.
The demonstration took place
after the US government refused
to extradite Posada on Friday.
Venezuelan Vice President Jose
Vicente Rangel, who also
participated in the parade, told
the press after the
demonstration that the
Venezuelan Embassy in the United
States would deliver a 700-page
official document to Washington
for Posada's extradition.
If the US government refused to
hand over Posada, Venezuela
would seek help from
international organizations,
such as the Organization of
American States, the United
Nations or the International
Court of Justice, Rangel said.
Posada, 77, was born in Cuba and
gained Venezuelan citizenship in
1960. He was sentenced to
imprisonment in Venezuela on
charges of involvement in a
Cuban airliner bomb attack,
killing 73 people, in 1976.
After a successful escape from a
prison in Venezuela in 1985,
Posada was involved in a series
of bomb attacks in Havana and
attempts to assassinate Cuban
President Fidel Castro.
Posada illegally entered the
United States two months ago and
tried to seek asylum there
through his lawyer in April.
The Venezuelan government asked
the United States to extradite
Posada to Venezuela right after
Posada's request for the US
asylum.
In mid-May, Washington arrested
Posada for having entered US
territory illegally, but has
refused to hand him over to
Venezuela.
