Strong Earthquake Rocks El
Salvador, Guatemala
Amid an emergency triggered by
heavy rain, flooding and
landslides, a strong earthquake
rocked El Salvador and part of
Guatemala on Friday, with no
victims or heavy damages
reported so far.
The quake, with a magnitude of
6.2 on the Richter scale, was
felt at about 11:40 (local
time).
Local media confirmed that the
mobile phone system collapsed
and people panicked.
Minister of Interior Rene
Figueroa urged the people to
keep calm and evacuate high risk
areas made vulnerable as water
saturation of soil pose a
serious danger.
At least 65 people were killed
and another two went missing in
landslides triggered by heavy
rain in El Salvador this week.
The quake was also felt in
neighboring Guatemala, where 150
people have died from flooding
and landslides caused by heavy
rains. Thousands of families
were left homeless and lost all
their belongings.
Authorities said the number will
probably rise, as there are 300
people still missing.
