Hospital Fire Suspect in
Custody
The Organismo de Investigación
Judicial (OIJ) finally have a
suspect in their hands,
arresting 24 year old, Juan
Carlos Ledesma Sánchez,
responsable for the fire that
took 21 lives at the Calderón
Guardia hospital on July 12 this
year.
The arrest took place in San
Ramón, an hour northwest of San
José. The man is described as
single and has a professional
degree for nursing, among other
jobs, that police say are false.
OIJ officials arrested the man
at his home early yesterday
morning, knocking on his door
with a warrant in hands. The man
did not resist the arrest and
was immediately transferred to
the OIJ cells in san José.
Investigators say they have
sufficient evidence linking
Sanchéz to the tragic incident
and believe personal problems
led him to set the fire. Sanchéz
had been under investigation
from the beginning, but it
wasn't until now that the
Fiscalía (prosecutor's office)
decided to effect an arrest.
Police say that they believe
that Sanchéz never meant to
cause any harm or deaths, but
rather to be a hero, just like
he did in the small January fire
at the hospital, which evidence
points to him as well as having
set the fire in a hallway closet
and was quickly put out to his
efforts.
Today (Saturday) a judge is
expected to order Sanchéz to six
months preventive detention as
the Fiscalía prepares it's case
against him.

Juan Carlos Ledesma Sánchez, is
suspected of setting the fire
that killed 21 at the Calderón
Hospital in July. A psychologist
says that Sanchéz suffers from a
mental condition and was trying
to be a hero, like he did in
setting the January fire at the
hospital and not a villain. |
