Driver of Armoured Truck Heist Detained
Carlos Sánchez, the driver of the armoured truck that was the object of a theft, was quickly converted from victim to suspect, charged with aggravated robbery by the Ministerio Público.

Sánchez was the driver of Wackenhut armoured truck when a gang of thieves ambushed it as it made a delivery at a BAC San José bank branch. The driver was taken with the truck and dumped from the vehicle a short distance from the robbery scene and called for help.

The driver is being held in the jail cells of the Segundo Circuito Judicial waiting for a judge of the Juzgado Penal de San José to determine if the man is to go free or will remain in preventive detention.

The armoured truck was said to have been carrying some ¢190 million colones (us$388.000) in cash and other valuables and was abandoned in a coffee plantation a short time after it was taken when the thieves could not open the vehicles' vault and became nervous with the presence of a police helicopter.

Police believe that the gang is from the Pavas area and have begun an intensive search for the assailants.
