UN Millennium Development Goals
director Jeffrey Sachs, is
visiting Guatemala Monday to
learn about its food industry of
a country, where 49 percent of
the children under five years
old suffers from chronic
undernourishment.
Invited by the Food Safety
Department, Sachs will have a
meeting with the Ministers of
Health, Finance and Education,
to advise them on development
measures.
The economist and author of the
book The End of Poverty will
visit the chorti indigenous
community, which has the worst
rates of human development than
any other ethnic group in the
country.
Guatemala currently is home to
more than 46,000 chorties in
Jacotan, Camotan, San Juan la
Ermita and Olopa municipalities,
all from the Chiquimula Eastern
department, according to the
latest national census.
Camotan and Jocotan villages
made the headlines there a few
years ago after the death of
hundreds of people, most
children.
