Garcia
surpasses Flores: final report
on Peru vote count
Social Democrat Alan Garcia has
qualified for the second round
of presidential voting in Peru,
surpassing right wing Lourdes
Flores of the National Unity
Alliance with more than 110,000
votes, according to an official
report on Tuesday.
The former soldier and leader of
the Nationalist Union Party,
Ollanta Humala, has maintained
his first place in the
general-election vote since
Sunday, with 30.86 percent of
citizens' backing, said the
final official report of the
National Electoral Processes
Office (ONPE).
Garcia, a candidate from the
Partido Aprista Peruano, won
24.69 percent of votes while the
National Unity Alliance lagged
behind with 23.6 percent.
According to the ONPE, the exact
figures of the final result will
not be announced until the
National Election Jury resolved
disputes over the election.
The second round of the
presidential election must be
held within 30 days after the
release of the official results
between the two candidates who
garnered the most votes.
