Haiti's
president-elect Rene Preval
visits Cuba
Haitian president-elect Rene
Preval began a four-day visit of
Cuba on Wednesday, where he will
discuss bilateral cooperation
with Cuban President Fidel
Castro.
Preval, on the invitation of
Castro, arrived at midday in the
eastern city of Santiago de
Cuba, where he was welcomed by
local officials and Haitians
studying at the local medical
school. The reception was aired
on state-run television.
The Cuban government said Preval
was accompanied by a delegation
"that includes several members
of his future government".
Ties between the neighboring
Caribbean countries were
restored after a break spanning
more than 30 years in 1996, when
Preval was elected president for
the first time.
Preval won the title again in
February's election and is set
to take office on May 14.
Preval met with U.S. President
George W. Bush on March 28 in
Washington.
