Reaction to OAS Report in
Nicaragua
Civil organizations and
political parties continue to
wait for the reaction of the
Supreme Election Council (CSE)
to a report by the Organization
of American States on the
preparations for the elections
in Nicaragua.
The OAS observers in this
Central American country said in
Washington on Tuesday that
several anomalies and
deficiencies had been detected
in Nicaragua s election process.
The irregularities found by
Gustavo Fernandez, head of OAS
observers, include delays in the
registration of voters, power
conflicts within the CSE, and a
deficient electoral roll, among
others.
The former Bolivian foreign
minister said, however, that
although the current conditions
are not optimal, they can be
improved by November 5, when the
general elections are scheduled.
So far, the registration process
has become the lightening rod
for critics of the CSE, which
they accuse of favoring the two
major political forces in the
country.
Three of the magistrates in the
election power are members of
the Sandinista National
Liberation Front (FSLN), and the
three others belong to the
Constitutionalist Liberal Party
(PLC).
CSE President Roberto Rivas,
however, has no known political
affiliation, so the accusations
may be part of a plot to
discredit the CSE.
