Central America Ombudsmen vs.
CAFTA-DR
Human Rights Ombudsmen from
Central America rejected the
US-devised free trade agreement
(CAFTA-DR) because of its
negative consequences for the
region.
Nicaraguan Sixto Ulloa called
the CAFTA-DR, which also
involves the Dominican Republic,
a trap giving most of the
benefits to the US due of the
heterogeneous economic
development of its members.
Compared to the US, Central
America is just 4.5 percent its
territory, 11.7 percent its
population and 0.5 percent its
GDP.
Ramon Custodio (Honduras) called
a pact among countries with such
contrasts deceiving, while
Lisbeth Quesada said Costa Rica
has not signed due to US efforts
to avoid its duties.
The Ombudsmen pledged to monitor
the CAFTA-DR on regional
employment and the economy.
Guatemalan Sergio Morales was
appointed president of the
Council of Central American
Ombudsmen.
