Colombian guerillas destroy 85
tanker trucks
Colombian guerillas on Monday
destroyed 85 tanker trucks with
six bombs in Maicao, a town in
the northwest Colombian
department of La Guajira on the
Venezuelan border, authorities
told local media.
Gasoline carried by the trucks
belonged to a Venezuelan
cooperative, which was going to
be distributed in the La Guajira
region.
Colonel Alejandro Callejas, the
head of police in the region,
said the Revolutionary Armed
Forces of Colombia (FARC) were
responsible for the assault,
because they had made public
threats against the Venezuelan
company, saying it had links to
paramilitaries.
"FARC front 59 has a presence
here and they triggered this
attack," Callejas told media.
The attack also injured two
people when a bomb landed and
exploded in their homes.
The Colombian army was now
chasing the rebels, Colonel
Callejas added.
The FARC, which has been
battling with the Colombian
government since the mid-1960s,
recently stepped up its fighting
in a series of bomb attacks.
