Garbage Collectors Ask For Police Escort To Dump
Garbage collectors in San José are constantly worried about being victims of aggression by delinquents at the La Carpio sanitary fill. Last Friday alone, garbage collector José Espinoza, was shot at as he was leaving the fill at 11pm.

The garbage trucks are obligated to enter the fill at night to dump their load, as the 50 tonnes of trash daily of the downtown core can only be collected at night.

The garbage collectors are asking the Municipality of San José to provide police escorts for them and their trucks when making the night deposits at La Carpio. The other option, said Hector Cerdas, of the Asociación Nacional de Empleados Públicos y Privados en la Municipalidad de San José, is to hold the trucks at the municipal plant and then dump their load in the early morning hours.

In addition to the shooting last Friday, four more garbage collectors have been attacked so far this year. Cerdas says that perhaps it is resentment on the part of the EBI company that lost the contract for the fill, or its just acts of delinquency in an area that not even the police dare to patrol.

La Carpio, located southwest of San José, a short distance from the Hospital México and the Parque de Diversiones, is one of the more conflictive areas in San José. The area is firmly controlled by local gangs and police have failed to establish a presence there.
