Costa Rica, Guatemala and El Salvador win first round of Volleyball Cup
Costa Rica, Guatemala and El Salvador were the winners of the first round matches in the 14th Central-American Women's Volleyball Cup in San Jose, Puerto Rico, on Wednesday.

Costa Rica beat Honduras 3-0 (25-15, 25-17 and 28-26); El Salvador beat Panama 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 27-25 and 26-24), finally Guatemala beat Nicaragua 3-1 (14-25, 25-13, 25-18 and 27-25).

The next games are Nicaragua-El Salvador, Guatemala-Honduras and Costa Rica-Panama. Every team will play every other team and the final result will be published on Saturday.

The Costa Rican team are using this competition to hone their skills for the October-November World Cup in Japan.

Costa Rican volleyball officials said that swift returns, effective blocks and greater international exposure had helped the local team to win.

Costa Rica's coach, Braulio Godinez, told local media he had encouraged all the players to take part in the first so that they would lose their fear of competition.

Honduras's coach, Walter Montes, said that his team's lack of international experience was noticeable in their match with the Costa Rica team.

"Costa Rica is going to the World Cup and has Central America's strongest team, but we are always hoping to play a better game," Montes said. "In the third set we showed that we have some of the necessary weapons, but that we need more matches," he added.
