US Measures Worry El Salvador
El Salvador's government expressed concern Wednesday about the possibility that thousands of its citizens with temporal residence in the US will become illegal immigrants.

Washington made a preliminary announcement on the registry of some 70,000 Salvadorians in the US, which is worrying to the administration, noted Salvadorian Chancellor Francisco Laínez.

US Immigration authorities gave September 1 as the deadline for 240,000 Salvadorians, recognized under the Temporal Protection Statue, to renew their annual permit.

Lainez estimates that at least 2.5 million Salvadorians are living in the US. The US is home to more than a fourth of the people born in El Salvador, which represents one of the world ó s highest immigration rates.
