Honduras Nurses Back to Streets
Nurses of the Honduras public
health network have taken the
streets again Monday to demand
government endorsement of a
salary increase to come into
effect by next year.
The health professionals, it is
estimated that 926 of the 1200
Honduran nurses are involved,
gave the government of President
Manuel Zelaya a five-day
ultimatum and warned of possible
pressure measures if their
demands are not met.
Perla Simons, leader of the
sector, confirmed former Health
Minister Orison Velasquez agreed
to an increase of 130 dollars,
which would mean an additional
million dollar allocation to
that sector every year.
Meanwhile, present Health
Minister Yeny Meza expressed the
government ó s wish to meet the
nurses request but warned of the
need to heed the country ó s
present financial situation.
