Panamanian Trade Deficit Grows
Panama´s trade deficit totaled
1.71 billion dollars during the
first semester of 2006, a
17.8-percent increase compared
to the same period last year,
official sources announced on
Monday.
According the General
Comptroller´s Office, imports of
good increased to 2.28 billion
dollars from January to June
2006.
That amount is 16.8 percent
higher than that of 2005, said
the sources, adding that
Panama´s exports of goods
totaled 573.8 million dollars,
accounting for a 4.3-percent
rise in contrast to the first
semester of last year.
Local analysts noted that one of
the causes of Panama´s increased
trade deficit is the high prices
of fuel in the international
market.
