Health Strike Still Jarring
Guatemala
The strike in Guatemalan public
hospitals will continue until
the Executive provides the
national network with
medications, equipments and
supplies, members of the Medical
School asserted.
The nearly two-month long strike
is affecting outpatient services
in nationwide hospitals.
According to Oscar Ruiz, member
of the medical union, of all the
agreements reached at a meeting
with President Oscar Berger to
solve the conflict, only the
reinstatement of doctors that
had been fired from their jobs
has been fulfilled.
The remaining demands, which
include the resignation of
Health Minister Marco Tulio Sosa
and directors of several
hospitals, a program to verify
the purchase of supplies,
submitting to Congress a widened
health project and beginning
negotiations to pass the
doctors´ statutes, are still
pending response.
