Gasoline Prices Drop Tomorrow
Whatever you do today, do not fill your gasoline tank, because at the stroke of midnight, the price of gasoline drops by as much as ¢20 colones a litre.

This is the first price drop is the first for this year following a series of increases that brought the price of gasoline to almost ¢600 colones a litre.

At midnight, gasoline stations around the country will modify the prices at the pump to reflect the request made by the Refinadora Costarricense de Petróleo (Recope) and approved last week by the Autoridad Reguladora de los Servicios Públicos (Aresep).

The notice of the approval was published in today's edition of the official government publication, La Gaceta, and takes effect at the stroke of midnight.

The new prices wil be ¢553 colones for a litre of regular, down from ¢573 and ¢580 colones for a litre of super, down from ¢597. Diesel gasoline will remain the same at ¢383 colones.

The reduction in real terms is a savings of ¢900 colones to fill a 45 litre tank with regular gasoline.

However, the lower prices won't be around for long. Gasoline station owners have asked the Aresep to approve an increase in their earnings on the sale of gasoline. The gross profit by the sale of gasoline by retailers is controlled and currenlty earn ¢25.29 colones for each litre dispensed.

Gasoline station owners want an increase to ¢34.57, or ¢9.28 colones added to each litre of gasoline purchased by consumers.
