Peninsular Ferry Strands
Passengers
Expect travelling to and from
Paquera (Tambor and points west
to Mal País and Montezuma) and
Puntarenas as the Ferry
Peninsular broke down yesterday
morning, causing delays while
repairs are being made.
The Peninsular experienced
electrical problems during its
4:30am run about one kilometre
from shore and the fishing boat,
San Bernardino, had to be called
to the rescue the passengers to
reach land.
The Asociación de Desarrollo de
Paquera (ADIP) who operates the
ferries and the docks at Paquera,
said that the 20 vehicles on
board the ferry, along with
their owners, remained on board
until later in the afternoon,
when an Incoop boat was used to
tow the ferry to dock.
Héctor Arce Cavallini, director
of the División de Circulación y
Transporte de Carga del
Ministerio de Obras Públicas y
Transportes (MOPT), explained
that the ADIP tried to hire on a
temporariry basis a ferry from
the Conatramar that operates to
San Lucas, but that ferry was in
for repairs, leaving ADIP to
work on solving the Peninsular
electrical problems.
Marco Badilla, an ADIP
assistant, said the problem was
"minor" and the work is being
carried out as quickly as
possible and in the shortest
time to return the ferry to
service.
The Peninsular Ferry carries
cars and passengers and takes
1.5 hours to cross to Paquera.
The other ferry operated by the
Barceló hotel group - the
Naveira Ferry - carries cars and
passengers and takes about an
hour and 15 minutes to cross to
Paquera in an air conditioned
environment.
