Panama Executive and Retirees at
Table
Panama 's government and
retirees will continue
discussing the pension increase
requested by the elderly, who
are threatening to go back to
the streets if their demands are
not met.
Second Vice President Ruben
Arosemena assured them that the
Executive is analyzing several
ways to resolve the problem.
According to the Panama America
newspaper, the conclusions of
those talks will be issued in a
document, including not only
finances, but also medicines and
the discounts not applied to
that sector in some places.
Wednesday s meeting did not
produce anything concrete, so
the third-agers have given the
administration a four-day
deadline to endorse a 30-percent
increase on pensions or they
will take to the streets again.
The dialogue between the parties
restarted Wednesday after
several days of verbal attacks
due to the serious differences
between the parties and division
among related groups.
As a pressure measure, that
Argentine sector has blocked
several streets of the capital,
mainly the Tran-seismic Highway,
Rio Abajo and the Pedregal
Cross.
Last week tension escalated when
several officials threatened to
use force to remove the old
people from the closed streets.
