Honduran Children Have Gloomy
Future
An unhappy and brief future is
all the 200 Honduran children,
who daily work in the capital's
garbage dumps, can expect, with
a life expectancy under 45 years
due to pollutant substances.
Local press reported a study
Thursday by an
inter-institutional commission
that denounced that these
children collecting scraps in
the municipal garbage dump are
condemned to be poisoned.
The investigation reveals the
time bomb in their little bodies
of 13 toxic elements, including
lead, arsenic, mercury and
cadmium.
It informs that even if the
levels of pollutant substances
do not surpass internationally
permitted levels, they still
foster development of nervous
diseases and shorten the
children's lives.
The study was carried out by the
Medical School of the University
of Verona, Italy; the Center of
Pollutant Studies and Control,
in Cescco and the Tegucigalpa
Mayor's Office.
