Tension Builds between
Colombia-Ecuador
Colombia s decision to continue
aerial fumigations on the border
with Ecuador, after promising
not to do so, has increased
tension between the neighboring
nations.
Ecuadorian President-elect
Rafael Correa condemned the
fumigation of coca leaf crops by
air only a little over 300 feet
from his country s border,
according to reports from Buenos
Aires in Bogota on Thursday.
"We are being attacked by Bogota,"
Correa told press during his
visit to the Argentine capital.
"When Colombia fumigates the
coca leaves, it damages our
crops and also affects the
farmers, and we cannot accept
that," declared the
president-to-be, who will take
up his post on January 15.
He warned that he would bring
the issue to the United Nations
or the Organization of American
States if necessary, and accuse
the Colombian government for the
harmful effects associated with
the toxin used.
