Central Bank Issues New Coins
Confused by the coins in
circulation? First there were
the nickel plated coins, which
were then replaced by the gold
coloured coins that could not be
used in many public telephones,
so the the nickel plated coins
were never removed from
circulation.
Now, to make matters worse, the
Banco Central de Costa Rica (BCCR)
will begin today to issue a new
series of coins in ˘5 and ˘10
colones dominations to replace
the existing coins.
The new coins are nickel plated,
just like the old coins, but at
the size of the new, now old,
gold coins. The new ˘5 and ˘10
colones coins will be able to be
easily identified by the blind,
said BCCR authorities and will
replace the existing gold coins
of the same denomination.
According to the BCCR, the
minting of the new coins cost
us$4 million dollars and
produced in Chile.
The distribution of the new
coins begins today by the
Central Bank to the local banks
and will then begin to withdraw
the old coins from the market in
September, at which time the old
˘1, ˘2, and large ˘5, ˘10 and
˘20 coins will be totally
eliminated. Well, that is the
plan, anyways.
