Mexico Will Not Join G8
Mexican Deputy Foreign Minister
Lourdes Aranda has ruled out her
country’s joining the so-called
Group of Eight (G-8) most
industrialized countries and
denied that such a proposal has
been made by British Prime
Minister Anthony Blair.
The only thing Blair said during
his recent trip to the US is
that the G-8 should count on the
regular presence of the main
emerging countries, rather than
as a member, she explained.
In her opinion, it was just a
“sort of vague, general
reference to emerging countries
that should be there,” but a
formal invitation for Mexico to
be member of the group has not
been contemplated, reiterated
Aranda.
Although Blair is among those
who have defended the idea of a
broadened, more representative
G-8, we know there are other
members who would prefer it
remain limited, the Mexican
diplomat said.
She highlighted the importance
of maintaining continuous
dialogue (as in the last three
years) between the select group
of developed states and the
so-called G-5: Brazil, India,
China, South Africa and Mexico.
