Brazil's weekend jail riots end with one dead, 20 injured
The eight jail riots over the weekend in Sao Paulo state, southern Brazil, ended on Sunday with one dead and 20 others injured, the authorities said.

Sao Paulo's state government said in a statement that the rebellions were over and that 19 hostages had been freed, but did not provide more details.

At 10:00 a.m. on Sunday (1300 GMT), the San Carlos jail rebellion ended with the release of the prisoners' only hostage, aprison guard.

Prisoners released him after authorities agreed to transfer some inmates out of the jail, built for 60 people but housing 224. The prison was partly destroyed during the riot.

About 20 guards and inmates suffered unspecified injuries after riot police were deployed to the prisons in Sao Paulo and Espirito Santo, north of Rio de Janeiro, reports said.

The local government said on Saturday that prison personnel in Franco da Rocha, Suzano, Parelhieros, Sao Bernando do Campo, and Sao Carlos were also attacked by inmates Saturday afternoon.

The weekend's riots started in the Araraquara, Itirapinoa and Mirandopolis jails on Friday night, while another five began on Saturday.

Although the latest wave of jail violence has ended, Sao Paulo residents remain fearful that there could be another simultaneous rebellion across the state, like May's massive attack inside prisons, which terrorized the cities and jails in the the state, Brazil's richest and most heavily populated region.
