Paraguay River to flood South
Brazil
Flooding in southern Brazil has
driven hundreds of families from
their homes, local media
reported on Friday.
The Paraguay River, in the
Pantanal region of the Mato
Grosso do Sul State, was already
five meters above its normal
level for the rainy season.
Around 80 percent of the land in
the region was expected to be
flooded for the next three
months, said government
officials.
The Brazilian navy has sent
several ships to the region in
its efforts to move local
residents to safer locations.
The Pantanal region has a
potential expanse of 250,000
square kms, making it the
largest flood zone, not only in
South America, but also the
world.
