Brazil to sign UN convention
against torture protocol
Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso
Amorim announced on Tuesday his
country will sign the UN
Convention Against Torture
protocol during the UN Human
Rights Council meeting in
Geneva, according to reports
reaching here.
The "Optional Protocol to the
Convention Against Torture and
Other Cruel, Inhuman or
Degrading Treatment or
Punishment," adopted in December
2002 by the General Assembly of
the United Nations, establishes
an international monitoring
mechanism that will enable the
effective implementation of the
convention against torture.
Amorim said the protocol will be
delivered on June 26, the
International Day against
Torture.
The first session of the Human
Rights Council, kicked off on
Monday, will last until June 30.
Senior delegates from more than
100 countries will address the
session, expressing their views
on the future work of the new
body.
