Chilean president promises to
improve refugees' lives
Chilean President Michelle
Bachelet reiterated a government
promise on Tuesday to work hard
to improve the living conditions
of the more than 1,100 refuges
living in the South American
nation.
"Many Chileans know what it
means to leave one's homeland
and live overseas... where
everything seems hostile at
first, but where a gesture or a
show of welcome can be so
valuable," Bacheletsaid, while
addressing a ceremony for World
Refugee Day at the La Moneda
Palace's cultural center.
Bachelet said that the Interior
Ministry would study a new set
of norms to provide better care
for those refugees.
Chile officially recognizes 850
refugees and is processing
another 250 asylum applications.
Most of the refugees are
Colombians, but there are also
people from 28 other countries,
including Afghanistan, Sri
Lanka, Rwanda, Nigeria and Peru.
