"Green" Alert Declared
The heavy rains that have been
constant for the last couple of
days in various areas has
prompted the Comisión Nacional
de Prevención de Riesgos y
Atención de Emergencias (CNE) to
declare a green alert for the
Caribbean, the Northern zone and
the Central Valley (San José)
The downpours that have been
reported in just about every
part of the country is causing a
number of rivers to rise,
placing at risk many homes in
flood zones.
A spokesperson for the CNE said
that areas like Turrialba,
Pejibaye, Bajo Corina, Matina,
Ciudad Quesada and a large area
of the Área Metropolitana (San
José) experienced heavy rains
during the morning hours
yesterday (Thursday). Much of
the same is expected for today.
Residents near the Chirripó
river reported a rise in the
river near Matina (Limón), as
well as the Boca Coen and Vesta
rivers.
The Instituto Meteorológico
Nacional (IMN) - weatherman -
said these conditions will
continue into the weekend, as
heavy rains and lightning will
be the norm in some area,
especially in the Caribbean
coast and northern zone. For
now, the southern part of Limón
province is still dry, according
to the IMN.
The IMN reported that some 85mm
(3.3 inches) of rain fell on
central Caribbean coast during
the last 36 hours.
