Arias Seeks Out Catholic Church Support
La Nunciatura Apostólica was the location of the meeting yesterday between the leader of the Catholic church in Costa Rica and president Oscar Arias, who again held discussion on the well being of the country.

La Nunciatura Apostólica is the Vatican's diplomatic residency in Costa Rica, representing Pope Benedict XVI and the Catholic church.

Smiles were on the face of the president and the Bishops in Costa Rica. "The Catholic church is not only welcome, but also necessary in all our efforts" said Arias.

At the meeting were also present members of the Supremo Poderes and the Diplomatic Core as well as special invited guests.

Arias said that the Evangelical, Christian and Catholic churches are a major force on the social changes in the country. The president added that he is convinced that Costa Rica will not rise above its poverty if it doesn't achieve economic growth and for its location and size, the country needs to open itself up to the world.

Discussions also surrounded the possibility of a visit by the Pope. Monseñor Osvaldo Padilla, said that there was little probability of that, however San José's archbishop, monseñor Hugo Barrantes, said it would be marvellous if the Pontiff were to visit next year, stopping in Costa Rica on his way to Brazil to attend the International Bishop's Conference.
