Río Azul Now An Open Garbage Pit
It took some six years to convert the Río Azul into a land fill, where garbage was coverage with dirt. However, due to a Sala IV decision, in days the land fill has become an open garbage dump, full with the stench and flies.

The Sala Constitucional (Constitutional Court) received "recurso amparo" (an appeal) by a neighbour of Tres Rios against the removal of dirt from Cerro Asilo, the location where the dirt came from used in the land fill.

The court decision prohibits the Federación Municipal del Este (FEDEMUR) from excavating the site while the court resolves the appeal and some 10.000 tonnes of garbage are being exposed to the open air.

Close by at the Francisco Gamboa school is exposing some 700 students and teachers to the smell and flies that have been common in the last week. FEDEMUR has asked the magistrates of the Sala IV for a quick hearing to resolve the issue, but has yet to receive an answer.

The school has turned to the Ministerio de Salud for help, which is yet to respond.
