Chilean
Communists Oppose Bachelet
The Chilean Communist Party has
said it will maintain a position
of "demanding opposition" v/v
the government of Michelle
Bachelet, who will be sworn in
on March 11.
"We will keep an open mind to
contribute to the fulfillment of
commitments, but we will be very
demanding, we will not sit there
with our arms crossed," said CP
President Guillermo Teillier.
The CP voted for Bachelet in the
second round, but that support
was conditioned on the
president-elect´s commitment to
work to eliminate the
antidemocratic and
discriminatory binominal
election system and to take
other economic, social and
environmental measures.
Teillier pointed out that,
considering the make-up of the
Bachelet-appointed Cabinet and
working teams, little can be
expected from the neoliberal
path her government will take.
