Nicaragua: Lowest Wages in
Central America
Nicaraguan workers are the worst
paid across Central America,
according to a report issued
Thursday in Managua by the
national human rights center.
The low salary adds to the fact
that Nicaraguan workers have the
worst access to health and
education in the region.
The four-month strike by doctors
and health staff demanding wage
improvements illustrates best
this situation in the nation,
the report says.
Health workers and physicians
want salaries similar to those
of their Central American
colleagues, around 1,500 dollars
a month.
Even worse are other social
sectors in which over 70 percent
of the people live with less
than two dollars a day.
According to the report, the
2006 budget shows that the bad
distribution of economic
resources influences social
rights violations.
While the Executive assigned
more than 200 million dollars to
pay the domestic debt with local
banks and almost 80 million for
the foreign one, it only gave 23
million to improve salaries of
the public employees.
