May 1 -
A Day of Protests
The Legislative Assembly will be
in full dress for May 1, one of
the many Costa Rican traditions,
that will see President Abel
Pacheco give his final speech as
president and see move in the 57
new deputies that will make the
legislative sessions for the
next four years.
May 1, the "Dia Interncional del
Trabajador" (Labour Day) is
celebrated throughout Latin
America.
In Costa Rica, the tradition is
for the president to give his
accounting for the past year and
lay out his plans for the coming
year, followed by celebrations.
Former presidents and government
officials are among the invited
guests who dress up for the day.
This year, however, the
celebrations will be marred by
protests.
Some 20.000 are expected to
gather by noon time in front of
the Legislative Assembly
building to protest the Tratado
Libre de Comercio (TLC) - free
trade agreement with the United
States.
Other labour issues will also be
part of the protest.
The protest will begin at around
10am this morning at the Parque
La Merced, at the west end of
Avenida Segunda, and them move
to the Parque de La Democracia
and in front of the Legislature.
Organizers say that regional
demonstrations will take
place in Puntarenas, Ciudad
Neily, Nicoya, Cañas and Pérez
Zeledón.
