Protest Went Almost Unreported
While the entire country was
immersed in the inauguration of
president Oscar Arias, a group
of protestors led y the strong
Instituto Costarricense de
Electricidad (ICE) workers
union, FIT ICE, took advantage
of the day to protest the
Tratado de Libre Comercio (TLC)
- free trade agreement with the
United States (CAFTA).
However, little mention was made
in today's printed newspapers or
on television news broadcasts.
About the only media that
expressed any interest in the
protest was the foreign news
media with reports and photos of
the protestations outside the
offices of the ICE building in
La Sabana (across from the
national stadium) and on the
downtown streets of San José.
Jorge Arguedas de FIT ICE said
that the protest was not
necessarily against free trade
but not to sell out the country.
