Canadian Students Chip In
El Progreso, population 500, in
northern Costa Rica now boasts
of a community hall built thanks
to the efforts of 29 students
from Coquitlam, Canada.
The
Canadian youngsters collected
some us$10,000 by washing cars,
selling bath soap, and
toothpaste on weekends.
They
used the money on materials,
then bought their own air
tickets, and helped build the
hall. Melanie Anderson, 17, and
Lauren Holmes, 16, said that
they were thrilled with the
experience, learning about
another country, and helping a
community such as El Progreso.
Anderson added that they planned
to come back next year, such is
the warm welcoming they were
accorded in Costa Rica.
