Guatemala, Farmer Offices Broken
into
Leader of the Indigenous and
Farmer National Department
(CONIC) Juan Tiney Monday
condemned the breaking into that
entity´s offices in the
Guatemalan capital and urged the
government to investigate the
acts.
Monday´s early morning
unidentified individuals broke
into CONIC headquarters, located
in the city´s historical center,
and stole money, two TV sets, a
tape recorder and the CPU of a
computer.
Documents from the Accounting,
Promotion and Information and
Women Departments as well as an
implementation project on
hurricane Stan were similarly
stolen.
According to the farmer leader,
the intimidation act is an
attempt to stop the popular
movement fights in favor of its
historical rights.
On April 5, the same day of the
call to a national
demonstration, two CONIC leaders
were murdered and now this
affront takes place just when
the national talks with the
executives are expected to
start, the leader remarked.
"These actions will not yield
us," said Juan Tiney and
expressed the commitment to
maintain the just and historical
demands.
After the strong protests and
demonstrations last month,
unions, indigenous and farmer
organizations forced the
executive to accede to
negotiations on the demands.
