Guerrillas attack bus on
Colombian election day
A group of guerrillas attacked
and burned a bus in the eastern
province of Arauca early on
Sunday, the day when nearly 26.7
million Colombians are expected
to vote for their new president,
the local Caracol radio
reported.
The bus was burned on the road
from Duitama to Tame, about 300
km to the northeast of Bogota,
the capital city. It was the
first sign of terrorist activity
on the election day. There has
been no report yet on any
victims.
Earlier, the Revolutionary Armed
Forces of Colombia (FARC), the
largest armed rebel group in
this country, announced that
they had no plans to sabotage
the elections.
Polls opened at 8:00 a.m. (1300
GMT) and were expected to close
at 4:00 p.m. (2100 GMT).
There are 9,820 polling
stations, with a total of 55,510
ballot boxes in 1,098 cities and
towns across the country.
Around 80 observers, from the
Organization of American States,
the European Union and the
European Parliament, will
monitor the vote.
Some 220,000 police and soldiers
have been deployed across the
country during the elections.
