Guatemalan Powers Try to Ease
Tension
The Guatemalan new Congressional
board of directors, composed by
the opposition, met President
Oscar Berger on Wednesday, in an
attempt to knock the rough edges
and move towards reconciling
both State powers.
Deputy Ruben Dario Morales, who
will lead the legislature during
2007, asserted that coordination
was achieved, regarding the main
State policies, in which there
is 80 percent of coincidence.
He first mentioned the country´s
governability, in search of
which the presidents of the
three powers will meet monthly
to harmonize their initiatives.
In reference to the security
policies, Morales expressed his
willingness to approve all the
pending laws to implement the
instruments that have been
already created, as the National
Forensic Science Institute.
Other matters analyzed in the
meeting were the initiatives to
make liable the public
administration work and creation
of the Migrant´s National
Council, which will process the
needs of residents abroad.
A very controversial issue is
approval of the National General
Budget for 2007, in which the
parliamentary groups have not
reach consensus.
