Carnage On the Road Continues
The carnage on Costa Rican roads
continues as another family is
killed, this time on the
Interamericana Sur, in the early
hours of Tuesday morning when a
mother was taking her two
children to school.
The accident occurred at 5:40am
Isabel Cristina Winter Agüero, a
31 year old teacher, was heading
for her school, the Escuela
Bergel de Cajón, with her two
children José Pablo and Luis
Diego, six and ten years of age,
respectively.
The vehicle drvien by Winter
slammed head on with a bus
operated by the Tracopa bus
company. The small 4x4 vehicle
became encrusted under the front
end of the bus and a tow truck
as required to pull it out.
According to the Policía de
Tránsito and the INS (insurance)
inspector, the small vehicle
crossed the median into the path
of the bus, which was unable to
avoid the head on collision,
dragging the vehicle some 50
metres before coming to a stop.
According to the version of the
driver of the bus, Enrique
Alfaro, the Geo Tracker crossed
the median as it was passing a
curve.
The Tracker was not passing
another vehicle. "I saw the
vehicle coming at me like it was
out of control. The only
explanation is the driver was
asleep at the wheel", said
Alfaro, a driver with 30 years
of experience.
Four passengers of the bus were
injured, though did not require
hospitalization. The
Interamerican Sur, at kilometre
239, was closed until 11:40am.
The cause of the accident is
still yet unknown.
On Sunday another head on
collision claimed the lives of
three family members on the
Bernardo Soto highway near San
Ramón, as two passenger vehicles
collided. One of the drivers
falling asleep is being blamed
for the cause of that accident.
November has been the worst
month for traffic fatalities.
More than 300 have died on the
nation's roads this year and
this has transit authorities
concerned as the month of
December begins, when drinking
and driving increases as the
holiday season nears.
