47.000 Families Live in Shantytowns
According to a report on the state of the nation on the development of the country, there are a total of 47.058 families living in "precarios" - shantytowns.

The report is based on figures for 2004 and 2005 on the housing situation in the country and the Estudio Exploratorio de los Efectos del Bono Familiar de la Vivienda which has eight low income family projects on the go, along with a report by the Fundación Promotora de Vivienda (Fuprovi) which covers the period fo 1989-2005.

The area with the highest number of living in precarios is the San José metropolitan area with 32.797 families, followed by Puntarenas with 4.259 families.

According to Guillermo Monge, of the Ministerio de Vivienda (housing ministry), the government hopes to reduce the alarming number within the next four years.

Monge said that the government is working on projects that will allow poor families to be relocated from precarios and hopefully allow them to buy homes with the subsidies provided by the government and the help of the financial communities, like the banks, in providing low cost loans and credit.
